GMC has launched the new and improved 2021 Sierra Heavy Duty. It is a magnificent pickup truck that blends necessity and aesthetics beautifully. It has gained popularity because of its quick and smooth diesel powertrain, tactile steering and advanced trailer assist technology. This pickup truck comes in 2 variants - the GMC Sierra 2500HD and the GMC Sierra 3500HD. Here is a quick insight into the specs and features of this pickup truck to help you get a better understanding of this vehicle.

Engine Transmission and Performance

The Sierra HD has a powerful 6.6-liter V-8 engine that produces a whopping 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft torque. This engine runs entirely on gas. It is further paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission gear. It also provides the option of only rear or all-wheel drive. You can also opt for a Duramax diesel V8 engine that has a capacity of 6.6-liter for this pickup truck. This engine ups the power of this vehicle further by delivering 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft torque. This variant further comes with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission gear. This combination of a Duramax engine and an Allison gear makes the Sierra HD an unbeatable ride in this segment.

2021 Sierra Heavy Duty TrimsTowing and Payload Capacity

The Sierra 2500HD has a promising towing and payload capacity. Its top model can carry up to 3979 lb in its cargo bed and tow up to 18,500 lb. On the other hand, the Sierra 3500HD has a payload capacity of 7442 lb and a towing capacity of 35,500lb.  To help maintain optimal operating temperatures of the available 6.6L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel V8 engine, a massive 28" variable-speed cooling fan was added. Dense, cool air from the Dual Path Air Induction System is drawn through both the hood scoop and the large grille to maximize horsepower and help optimize trailering performance. The factory-installed Diesel After-Run feature is designed to help cool down the engine following heavy usage.

Some of the features of this truck to help with towing and payload:

  • To help with positioning, after backing up to a trailer hitch using available Hitch View, Sierra Heavy Duty will automatically apply the electric parking brake upon shifting into park to avoid unintentional rolling.
  • Prevents movement when shifting out of park on a hill and moving a foot from brake to accelerator pedal by automatically applying brakes at each wheel for an extended period of time while trailering.
  • Eases driver’s steering effort when maneuvering at low speeds, reduces the steering effort needed to return the heavy-duty truck to center, and adapts to crowned road surfaces, reducing the need to correct steering over long stretches of uneven road. It includes new enhancements to help with driving response, especially when trailering or when carrying a heavy load.
  • Sierra is the first heavy-duty truck in its class to offer a 2-speed AutoTrac™ transfer case with an active automatic 4WD setting, which provides seamless shifting between two- and four-wheel drive based on road conditions.
  • Allows you to quickly switch between multiple traction configurations, including Off-Road mode and Tow/Haul mode, to optimize powertrain calibrations, traction control settings and stability control system calibrations for a variety of terrain and driving conditions. The system will retain the Tow/Haul setting configurations for up to 4 hours after the vehicle is turned off, eliminating the need to reengage the system when returning from a brief stop on a long journey.
